São Bento do Norte Wind Farm – Brazil

A sleepy coastal town in northeastern Brazil, São Bento do Norte is home to about 3,000 residents. The district also hosts a 94 MW wind complex.

The São Bento do Norte wind complex comprises 47 Vestas 2MW turbines installed across the district.

  • São Bento do Norte – 15 turbines (30 MW)
  • Dreen Boa Vista – 7 turbines (14 MW)
  • Dreen Olho D’Água – 15 turbines (30 MW)
  • Farol – 10 turbines (20 MW)

A dedicated transmission system connecting the wind farm to the national grid was also erected.

The wind complex was originally developed by local firms Dreen Brasil and Galvao Energia. Copel acquired a 49.9% stake in June 2011, and the remaining 51.1% in December 2013.

At the end of 2016, Brazil’s share of the world’s installed wind power capacity was 2.2% or 10,740 MW.
